Abstract
This study examines how Spanish newspapers and magazines portrayed Sergei Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes during the company’s presence in Spain in the 1910s and 1920s. Drawing on a broad range of national and regional periodicals, the analysis traces how Spanish writers framed the troupe’s artistic reputation, its impact on local audiences, and its place within broader European cultural currents. Press commentary proved remarkably sustained. The first publications appeared before Ballets’ first tour in Madrid in 1916 and continued to follow the company’s activities well after the final performances in 1927, including reflections published at the time of Diaghilev’s death in 1929. The study highlights the depth and persistence of Spanish engagement with the Ballets Russes and situates this reception within wider patterns of international cultural reporting.
