Abstract
The article examines one of the methods used by Soviet state authorities to combat representa- tives of unofficial culture – defamation. This term refers to the public dissemination of information, whether factual or partially factual, that discredits a person’s honor and dignity. The main focus is on the case of the Mayakovsky poets – young writers who recited poetry near the Mayakovsky monument in Moscow and distributed early samizdat almanacs (“Sintaksis”, “Feniks”). The relevance of the topic is proved by the ongoing interest in studying mechanisms of ideological control, as well as practices of stigmatizing underground authors (journalists, publicists, poets) in the USSR. The author aims to demonstrate how defamation was used by the official Soviet press as a tool in the struggle against dissent, both literary and political.
Keywords: defamation, Mayakovtsy poets, Soviet press, samizdat, dissent in the USSR.
